Strengthened perimeter – no f***in’ way

From the Beaver, I linked to this article.

Apart from all of the issues relating to actually being democratic that Allison alludes to, it would behoove the twat waffles who support this idea to remember; that not only do a lot of Canadians dislike this idea but a large proportion of the US right (which makes up most of their left too) hate it. Even though he is a paranoid mouthpiece on all things immigrationy, Lou Dobbs really illustrated the hatred for the intercontinental highway and any increase in NAFTA’s reach south of the border.

Canadians should distrust this attempt to build on NAFTA, because successive American governments have ignored their obligations under the treaty while ensuring we kept to ours. Imagine what would happen if they had reason to think we were undermining their security through our economic efforts. That’s if their security branches can actually get together long enough to actually formulate one policy and work together to enforce it.

Standing pat is one option – just let the borders be. But Canadian trade leaders see serious storm clouds here, not least because of the dog’s breakfast of competing U.S. security branches that now hold sway on border issues.

For additional evidence about the competence of their vaunted security services just look at the inter-agency debacle this weekend involving the relaying of information about the “groin bomber” from the US Embassy in Nigeria. When his dad comes in and drops a dime you really have to take this stuff seriously.

Also, do we as Canadians wish to be tethered to a country that is owned by China? Really what could possibly be in it for us except more debt and using our resources and environment to pay off the results of failed American criminal economic activity.

The sooner we get away from thinking that the USA is our only possible major market or ally and diversify our risks, the sooner we will be happier and more secure. Tying ourselves to them further will only benefit one partner and it isn’t us. Maybe that is what these folk at the Woodrow Wilson institute for wishful thinking are really hoping for.
