The government of the UK has arrested an alleged torturer on a point of law and as a matter of principle. Well colour me stunned. After Maggie allowed mass-murdering, torturer extraordinaire Pinochet to get on a plane and leave this is a turn up for the books.
Nepal is unsurprisingly annoyed to see one of their senior serving military officers called to answer his accusers claims, but it was the reasoning that the UK’s Ambassador gave to justify the arrest that rings most loudly with me.
“The ambassador explained to the ministry of foreign affairs that the action was taken by the Met police according to the UK law and the UK’s international obligation to uphold human rights as a party to the UN convention against torture,” a spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said on Sunday.
It’s going to be interesting to see if this welcome action is going to be enacted consistently going forwards, or if it’s just something that applies to non-western, non-white, non-wealthy, non-christian torturers. My betting is that as long as no-one, rich, white, western and/or christian is involved we’ll see more of this; but I’m willing to hold back on this until shown that my suspicions are founded.
Assuming it will be consistently applied GW, his gang of criminals and our own dear leader better plan their travel itinerary to avoid Heathrow,
