” Can this really be happening in 21st Century Europe?” It’s a question about this article.
It appears to be asked out of exasperation and with a genuine sense of surprise. The exasperation I understand, the surprise not so much. The Jews in Hungary and other nations that were quick to embraced the Nazi yoke the last time around have always been treated as the “other.” As indeed have the Roma.
Much like immigrants anywhere, the moment any country experiences any hardship the majority look around for someone to blame. In Central Europe that means the Roma and the Jews with new attention being paid to N Africans today. See the Golden Dawn in Greece.
Recently Steven Harper via Jason Kenney made the Roma a target in their attempt to curb their immigration to Canada. They even went so far as to post billboards in Hungary in Hungarian telling the Roma not to bother emigrating. On top of this they designated Hungary as a safe country from which no claims of political asylum would be accepted. The message from the Canadian right was Hungary is a fine and dandy place who are coming along fine; and this was done with the absolute knowledge that fascism and racism was on the rise in Hungary.
Add to that the Ezra Levant diatribe against the Roma in support of official Conservative policy and you really should not be at all surprised that the now internationally encouraged Christianist Nazis in Hungary are using this opportunity to attack their traditional enemy, the Jews. I guess the law of unintended consequences wasn’t taken into account when Kenney and Co were dehumanising the Roma.
At every stage our government has encouraged hatred of the Roma and the growth of a violent and vitriolic nationalist group in Hungary. Now we can see where those kinds of shenanigans lead. The flames of this particular fire were fanned by those with the same Conservative mindset as you Frum, where were you when Kenney and Harper were dealing with their Roma problem?
