Vic Toews wants more powers to fight terrorism, but not to determine root causes ok – Fair enough which of the ones that you are requesting would have prevented the Boston Bombing?

As usual those in power would like more power to tell us what we can and cannot do. The fact that Toews thinks we are well prepared for any Boston type situation doesn’t mean that that we have enough anti-terrorism powers in place right now.

Like any politician with an authoritarian streak in them Vic wants more laws to enable him to indulge in yet more panty sniffing. But what are these laws?

Some of the measures contained in Bill S-7, called the “Combating Terrorism Act,” include:

  • Making it an offence to leave the country to participate in acts of terror

  • Granting police the powers to pre-emptively arrest someone and hold them for up to three days without charge

  • Imprisonment for up to 12 months if an indvidual refuses to testify before a judge in an investigative hearing

So how in the name of the wee man will the above help prevent a Boston type bombing?

  • First one looks pretty ineffective.
  • Second one might have helped, but if the BPD had enough suspicions to do that then I’m hoping they would have been watching the bombers and would have stepped in prior to the bang.
  • Third one needs you to have identified the bombers first so falls on teh same hurdle as the second one.

Basically these measures would not have prevented a Boston style bombing and Toews is being a lazy arse and trying to use a recent attack and the concern it engenders to do his work for him. I guess he needs to get home to see the babysitter.

The appointment of this idiot to this position of importance just shows how incompetent Stephen Harper is. It also shows that the right are no friends of individual liberty as well as enemies of rational thought.

This makes perfect sense if you are Vic Toews. Actually it is a good plan if no one asks too many questions. Some people may be frightened by what happened in Boston so Vic in his haste to implement restrictions on our freedom, thought this might be another chance to pass into law which are actually a violation of our constitution. He figures if it worked in the U.S.A. it might work here. Unfortunately Canadians are a tad smarter than Americans and don’t fall for that sort of stuff.

You can’t prevent terrorists from acting if they are determined. How these bombings came about, we don’t know. If they young men alledged to have been involved, were then what caused them to be involved should be the questions. People committed to a cause will not back down because they think they may go to jail for a yr. or more. Didn’t work with the I.R.A. won’t work now.

What is so amazing is they actually got all of Boston to stay home in an attempt to arrest one person who it is alledged participated in killing 4 people. When there are mass killings with guns, not so much. it is business as usual. As they said on Jon Stewart’s show, in the past 30 yrs. 900,000 people have been killed by guns in the U.S.A. Only 3,400 have been killed in acts of terrorism in the past 40 yrs. Kind of makes you think.

The reason that it didn’t work with the IRA is that the Brits have been attacked by everyone and continue to be attacked to this day. The Americans never have to deal with this shit on their own turf and shit themselves when it happens. They are also quite prepared to give up all their freedoms to try and feel a little but safer for a little while.
There’s nothing like actual experience to stiffen the spine but for N Americans that experience is very limited and in the case of the USA it’s something they usually do to others.
